Developmental editing is a time-consuming and often expensive service, and as part of the writing community, I understand that it isn’t always affordable for every indie or self-publishing author. While it’s true that developmental editing requires a lot of effort, I’ve realized that I’ve been offering a lighter version of it for a long time. Doing similar work with less intensity and at a much lower cost. It took a few clients to point this out to me, but I don’t regret it. I want to give my best to the authors who trust me with their hard work, and if my beta reports are seen as more like editorial letters, that’s an honor.
So, if you’re wondering why I’m calling it light developmental editing at these rates, I hope this explains it. This package has become my most popular service as a beta reader, and I wanted to enhance it to be even more helpful for authors who prefer to self-edit or are looking to self-publish on a budget.
This service is for you if:
A comprehensive analysis of your draft, covering story arcs, characters, themes, world-building, engagement, readability, flow, narration, dialogue, and pacing.
Feedback on the structure and flow of the plot.
Feedback on plot twists and surprise elements.
Identification of major plot holes and story inconsistencies.
Feedback on character arcs and their backstory coherence.
Feedback on how the story begins and ends.
All possible solutions are tailored to fit the story’s style and essence.
Economical developmental editing, beta reading, and real-time reader reactions. All in one.
Deliverables
In-line comments (editorial feedback and suggestions)
A descriptive editorial letter analyzing story arcs, characters, themes, world-building, readability, flow, narration, dialogue, and pacing
Answers to any specified or follow-up questions after the final report
Developmental editing isn’t a guarantee that a book will sell well, but it’s a guarantee that the story will resonate with readers and leave a lasting impression. Many agree that it’s a crucial step for indie authors, especially in a market filled with well-written, engaging, and impactful stories. So, what will make your story stand out? Good development editing helps you achieve the best version of your story without losing your unique voice and style.
I pride myself on being an empathetic editor who respects the author’s style and tone while offering feedback, without imposing my own. Developmental editing is both time- and resource-intensive, and it should be done right to help you craft a story that leaves a mark on your readers long after they’ve turned the last page. Let’s work together to make that happen!
